A production plan that considers various combinations of packages with the various quality characteristics of LED chips is critical in minimizing production cost, while meeting the quality levels specified by customers. In assembling an LED array bar, appropriate package ranks should be used to both meet the requirements of customers and increase the usage rate of the package ranks.

In practice, creating an efficient plan for array production has two problems. The first is controlling the production level of chips with a specified rank. Because of the high variability in the wafer fabrication step, various chip ranks are fabricated from a given wafer, making it difficult for a process manager to obtain an exact number of chips with a specified rank. The second problem is that although chips with the same rank as the target packages are used, undetectable variations in the process conditions often make obtaining the targeted package rank difficult.

Our optimization software determines the best mix of LED parts in each assembly stage, given inventory levels of LED parts with different quality characteristics in order to reduce the scrap rate for LED packages.
